Shelter for Abused Women & Children
2007-2008 Fact Sheet
- 1989: original 20-bed Naples facility opened for those who were victims of domestic violence
- 2003: opened new state of the art 60-bed shelter with counseling offices, kennel and high security
- Serves all of Collier County, the largest of Florida's 67 counties
- Only state certified Shelter in Collier County – also serving Bonita Springs
- Population served: women and their children up to the age of 18, single women and men who are survivors of domestic violence of all races, socio-economic status and religions
- Shelter programs and services include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Empowerment-based (not rescue) philosophy
- 24-hour, 365 day per year Crisis hotline: 239-775-1101
- 60-bed shelter, including 40 emergency shelter and 20 transitional living program beds, providing 15,217 days of shelter
- Outreach (non-shelter) counseling offices in Naples and Immokalee
- Women's and children's support groups in English and Spanish at our Naples and Immokalee locations
- Counseling teams provide 17 support groups per week
- Individual and group counseling in English and Spanish for adults and children in Naples, as well as in Immokalee including: Creative Counseling classes (art, yoga)
- Safety planning in English and Spanish (women and children each develop safety plans)
- Elder abuse response program for domestic violence victims 60 years of age and older
- Women of Means program for educated, professional and/or upscale victims of abuse
- Court and legal advocacy
- Immigration assistance and human trafficking services
- In-school prevention programs for kindergarten classes on "Hands Are for Helping, Not Hitting," and for middle and high school students on teen violence, gender roles and date rape

- Direct assistance with food, clothing, personal care items, household goods, transportation, cell phones, etc. (in excess of $500,000 a year)
- Cell phone recycling program – donated cell phones are recycled for 911 calls only
- Options Thrift Shoppe – Shelter owned and operated resale shop that also provides program participants free gift certificates for clothing, shoes and household items such as furniture, kitchen appliances, dishes, pots and pans, and linens
- Fiscal Year 2006-2007: served 4,000 individuals, including 1,400 children
- 24-hour crisis hotline took more than 5,150 calls
- Website received 64,700 visits last year
- One of a handful of shelters in the USA with an on-site kennel so families can bring their pets
- Community and professional education to some 10,500 individuals last year
- 30,000 pounds of food distributed during the previous year
- 320 volunteers served a total of 24,215 hours
