Children's March On Main Helps Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence

Immokalee, FL – The Shelter for Abused Women & Children's Immokalee Outreach Office is hosting an afternoon of free activities from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a Children's March on Main, Monday, October 30, at 210 South First Street, Immokalee, as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. we'll host an afternoon of free fun including games, prizes and refreshments which will then be followed by the police escorted march down Main Street to help raise awareness about domestic violence in our communities," notes Immokalee Outreach Office Counselor/Advocate Rosa Leon.

The event concludes a month of activities hosted by the Shelter as a way to bring attention to the epidemic of intimate partner abuse in our homes, communities and across the nation.

According to Shelter CEO Kathy Herrmann Catino, "We're proud to be able to work with so many wonderful community partners in bringing attention to the reality of intimate partner abuse, as well as provide victims and survivors with the hope of a future free from violence." She continues, "To break the cycle of abuse we must start with educating our children and that is why we continue to host our Children's March on Main in Immokalee."

First observed in October of 1987, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an outgrowth from the first Day of Unity hosted by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in October of 1981. In 1989, the US Congress passed the first National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation and continues to pass the legislation each year in an effort to bring much needed attention to the many and varied issues that comprise domestic violence/intimate partner abuse.
