Children’s March on Main Street

WHO:            

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s Immokalee Outreach Office

WHAT:          

An afternoon of free activities for children, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a police-escorted Children’s March on Main, Main Street, Immokalee. This event is part of the Shelter’s National Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities taking place this October.

                        The afternoon activities include:

  • Games
  • Prizes
  • Refreshments
  • Health Fair featuring sister organizations, such as: Healthy Families, Children’s Medical Services, RCMA, Marion E. Fether Medical Center, Alzheimer’s Association, Head Start, Children’s Advocacy Center, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Planned Parenthood of Collier County, Farmworker Jobs and Education Program, PACE Center for Girls and more!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an outgrowth from the first Day of Unity hosted by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in October of 1981 and was first observed in October of 1987. In 1989, the US Congress passed the first National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation and continues to pass the legislation each year in an effort to bring life-saving attention to the many and varied issues that comprise domestic violence/intimate partner abuse.
