Shelter Kicks-off Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Educating with Emery Boards

Naples, FL –Members from the Peace Lutheran Youth Group will be distributing Emery Boards on behalf of the Shelter for Abused Women & Children at seven locations, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, September 30, 2007, as part of National Domestic Violence Month activities this October.

“How exciting to see children take such an active role in raising awareness about domestic violence and the programs and services available at the Shelter for Abused Women & Children,” details Shelter Volunteer & Resource Coordinator Jackie Young.

The emery boards feature the Shelter’s 24-hour crisis line number, 239-775-1101, as well as the organization’s web address, www.naplesshelter.org and serve as an inconspicuous way to distribute life saving information to victims of intimate partner abuse.

The following locations will be participating in this year’s Educating with Emery Boards initiative:

  • Publix at the Shops of Marco – 175 South Barfield Drive, Marco Island
  • Publix at Kingslake Square – 4860 Davis Blvd., Naples
  • Publix at Pine Ridge Crossing – 2310 Pine Ridge Road, Naples (Target Plaza)
  • Publix at Pelican Strand – 5624 Strand Blvd, Naples (Off Immokalee Road)
  • Publix at Naples Walk – 2450 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples
  • Sunshine Ace Hardware – 141 Tamiami Trail North, Naples (Next to Wynn’s Market)
  • Sunshine Ace Hardware Golden Gate – 11673 Collier Blvd. (Corner of Golden Gate & Collier Blvd.)

Educating with Emery Boards is one of several key activities the Shelter will be hosting during the month of October to help raise awareness about intimate partner abuse, including:

  • Cell Phone Drive throughout the month individuals and businesses will be able to drop their new and gently-used cell phones off at locations throughout Collier County so that they can be recycled and used by Shelter program participants for emergency 911 calls only.
  • Belize Survivor: Darker Side of Paradise Book Signing with author Nancy Koerner at Options Thrift Shoppe on Saturday, October 20, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for $25.00 each, with $5.00 from each sale benefiting the Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s life-saving programs and services.
  • Children’s March on Main the Shelter’s Immokalee Outreach Office will host children’s activities from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, October 29, 2006, followed by a police-escorted Children’s March on Main Street. (Additional details to follow).
