Breaking News: Nurses Help Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse Victims

Finding Their Voices - Nurses help victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse get care and find safety. In one 24-hour period in September 2008, 60,799 victims of domestic violence received support and found safety in programs and shelters across the U.S.1

As a certified Domestic Violence Shelter, The Shelter operates in accordance with Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence guidelines, Department of Children and Families requirements and Florida State s. 39.905. The Shelter continually strives to meet the needs of underserved populations by offering all services to victims of any age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, geographic isolation, language spoken and gender. The Shelter’s facilities are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant in order to meet the needs of those with physical impairments who cannot care for themselves. A TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) telephone line is available at The Shelter for residents who may be hearing impaired and Braille signage is used throughout the building. Because the majority of those we serve with limited English proficiency are Spanish speakers, all of our signage and materials are printed in both English and Spanish. The Shelter also offers materials in Creole to meet the needs of the Haitian community, which is the second largest limited English proficiency population that we serve. Translation needs for other languages are met through the ATT language line. The Shelter maintains a diverse, bi-lingual staff and expands cultural competency through staff training, developing programs for underserved populations, and maintaining and expanding its Immokalee (rural) Outreach Office.
